Forest Bathing
3:27 PMThe forest has long been my temple. I grew up near a redwood forest in northern California, a magical place of rich loamy smells and mossy mysteries. No wonder I now write about fairies and sacred wyldwoods in my Two Realms series.
In Japan, the healing properties of forests are embodied in Shinrin-yoku, forest bathing. With Shinrin-yoku, you open your senses and soul to the forest. What sounds do you hear? The gurgle of a stream or the rhythmic clacking of bamboo swaying in the wind? Are blue jays squawking? Or do you hear the high-pitch buzz of cicadas?
Stand in silence.
Hear your own thoughts.
Listen to the messages of the gods, goddesses, and fairy folk.
Watch for tree spirits.
